Are bolt-action rifles a realistic choice for home defense?

This is the question that I posted over at The High Road gun forum. I'd be interested to see what people think. I was planning to acquire an SKS or a Mini-14 rifle for home defense but the more I look at it the less I'm convinced all that having all that firepower is the most important factor unless I am confronted by a a zombie-style swarm attack.

Update: After four pages of comments the THR moderator closed the thread. The general consensus was the bolt rifles can be effect but it isn't a good idea unless it's all you have. Kinda disappointing but true I suppose.
