"Officers were called about 3:40 p.m. to the home, which is for sale, by a real estate agent.The realtor found copper that had been cut from the plumbing of the home, and was laying on the basement floor, police said. The real estate agent called the homeowner, who in turn called 911.Police suspected the crime had taken place recently."
What makes these crimes especially damaging is that thousands of dollars in damage are done just to get a few hundred dollars worth of copper.

Thousands without power in Pittsburgh area due to copper thieves (CBS TV Pittsburgh)
"According to First Energy, someone broke into a substation on Route 19 between Cranberry [PA] and Zelienople [PA] and stole all the copper ground wires."
What ever Obama says tonight the US is better off getting the hell out of Afghanistan (Tony Karon, Global Spin/Time)
"As Henry Kissinger famously noted, in an insurgency of this type, the guerrilla army wins by not losing; the conventional army loses by not winning."

Sign of the times... Copper thieves and their mischief
Copper thieves suspected in Pontiac, MI house explosion (WWJ-AM)
" 'This is about the fourth one of these we’ve had. The house is vacant at the time, they’re going in and we’ve got a problem with people taking pipes … turn the (gas) meter off, go in and take the pipes. But then they go back out, turn the meter back on, and this is what you end up with,' said [Pontiac Fire Department Battalion Chief John] Widdis."
This copper thievery is really getting to be a problem in Michigan. In Detroit they have rammed cars into power line towers knocking them down in order to steal the copper wire and leaving neighbors without electric for a few days. I think they may have blown the house deliberately to cover up the crime. But who knows really? We're starting to cannibalize our selves just to survive now.
